Decided I'll finish the most threadbare part and hang it where we can enjoy it. I feel like it may be a piece of clothing which was made into a bag. It's beautiful.
It is! Looked through my World Textiles book last night. it could be from India or China. The satin stitched items from both places are as fine as this.
at first I thought it was printed, but when I zoomed in, it looked to be embroidered?!
